CHINESE MANDARIN SPEECH CONTEST
Published on Monday, 7 April 2003, with permission from Patrick Lin The 28th Mandarin Speech Contest of California that just ended last Saturday has turned out to be a great success for DLI students. Competing with 566 registered contestants, 47 DLI students attended the contest and 17 won award prizes: 3 won 1st place; 3 won 2nd place; 5 won 3rd place, and 6 won Honorable Mention. DLI students again outperformed their counterparts from other universities and colleges. In the 7 competing groups that DLI students participated, DLI pocketed 17 award prizes out from the total 37 prizes while UC Berkeley won 6 prizes and Stanford got 4. That is really something that we should be proud of.
We owe our great success in the contest to our students’ motivation, our instructors’ dedication, and our dean's strong support. Thirty of our Chinese instructors attended the contest on Saturday, serving as either judges or organizing committee members.\ Patrick Lin, Chair, Chinese Department C.
