Jamshid Basseri (Top)
Jamshid Basseri, 75, a longtime Monterey Peninsula resident, died Thursday
at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile
accident. He was born July 13, 1926, in Tehran, Iran, and came to the U.S.
during World War II to study at the University of California at Berkeley,
later becoming a U.S. citizen. He received his masters at Berkeley and a
Ph.D. in education at UCLA.

Gunter Bode (Top)
Gunter Herrmann Otto Bode, 87, a longtime Pacific Grove resident, died of
Alzheimer's disease Sunday at his home. He was born in Breslau, Germany,
and lived in Pacific Grove for 14 years. Mr. Bode was a supervisor for the
Defense Language Institute in Washington, D.C., and later for the CIA Language
School. He was a World War II German Army career officer, and was awarded
the Iron Cross

Walter Bond (Top)
Walter Bond, 90, a retired Defense Language Institute Russian-language instructor,
died Thursday at Monterey Convalescent Hospital.Mr. Bond was born Dec. 7,
1911, in St. Petersburg, Russia, and lived in Monterey for 32 years.A graduate
of Finnish University in St. Petersburg, Mr. Bond traveled to the United
States in 1950 and earned a Ph.D. from Syracuse University in New York.
He was a senior instructor of Russian at the DLI for five years.

Susanne Schnieber-Biondo

Susanne Schnieber-Biondo, 59, an accomplished artist and educator, died
of cancer April 28 at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. She
was born Sept. 27, 1943, in Stolp/Pommern, Germany, which is now part of
Poland. She grew up among cherry and apple orchards near the city of Hamburg,
Germany, but as a child fled with her family from the advancing Russian
army during World War II. Mrs. Schnieber-Biondo received her master's degree
in psychology from the University of Hamburg, and was a professor at the
Pestalozzi-Froebel Haus in Berlin. She was also a forensic expert in custody
cases and family court for the Senate of Berlin. She ran symposia and workshops
in Berlin for women making the transition from the home to the labor force.
She was the founder and director of "Bewegung im Wedding," a center
for continuing education in Berlin. She came to the Monterey Peninsula in
1986, and in 1991 became the West Coast coordinator for Vincennes University.
She was the program coordinator for satellite campuses at Fort Ord, San
Diego and Bremerton, Wash. She helped many soldiers get their associate
degrees. She most recently worked as a German-language instructor at the
Defense Language Institute in Monterey. She was a member of the Council
of College and Military Educators, International Language and Culture Foundation,
Friends of CSU-Monterey Bay, the Seaside Aquatics board of directors, Monterey
Museum of Art, Friends of MAOS and the Central Coast Art Association. She
is survived by her husband of 23 years, Valerio Biondo of Del Rey Oaks;
a daughter, Rhea Biondo of Del Rey Oaks; and two brothers, Uwe Schnieber
of Hamburg, Germany, and Hartwig Schnieber of Köln, Germany. She was
preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelm Schnieber of Friedeberg/Neumark,
Germany, and Elizabeth Mueller of Hamburg in 1989. A celebration of life
ceremony will be from 1 to 4 p.m. May 18 at the Pacific Grove Art Center,
568 Lighthouse Ave. The family suggests that any memorial contributions
be made to a trust fund set up for the education of her daughter, Rhea Biondo.

Mary Brannan (Top)
Mary Jean Brannan, 81, retired librarian, died Jan. 16 at her Carmel home.She
was born in Modesto, raised in Alameda, and lived in Carmel for 50 years.Mrs.
Brannan worked as a librarian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey
for many years. She and her husband of 50 years, Peter, traveled extensively
during his military career and enjoyed traveling around the world after
his retirement.Mrs. Brannan was treasurer of the Monterey Peninsula Volunteer
Services for many years.

Bente Brunsvig-
Cicekdag (Top)
Bente Brunsvig-Cicekdag, 53, a language instructor, died Sunday after a
long illness at Stanford Medical Center.She was born Feb. 5, 1949, in Boston.
She taught Norwegian and German at the Defense Language Institute for 14
years, and lived in the area for 22 years.Mrs. Brunsvig-Cicekdag enjoyed
making pottery, crocheting and needlepoint. She loved animals and nature
and possessed a green thumb.

Ayca Fatma Dutertre, 45, a language instructor, died Saturday Graveside

Juliana Buenaventura Elliott, 88, an Italian-language instructor, died Nov. 24 at Pacific Rest Residential Care Facility in Monterey after a lengthy illness. She was born Feb. 11, 1915, in Naples, Italy. She lived in Monterey County for 43 years. Mrs. Elliott was an instructor at the Defense Language Institute for 15 years, retiring in 1987. A graduate of Monterey Peninsula College's medical assisting program, she was a medical assistant to two local doctors from 1966 to 1975. She is survived by a sister, Luisa Toscano, and other relatives in Livorno, Italy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Charles W. Elliott, two brothers, and a stepson, Robert. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Santa Rosalia Chapel at San Carlos Cemetery, with interment to follow. The family suggest that memorial contributions be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 182 El Dorado St., Monterey 93940, or to the donor's favorite charity.

Dr. Tomasz Gajewski

Dr. Tomasz Gajewski, 76, a retired linguist at the Defense Language Institute,
died Monday at his home. He was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Radomsko, Poland,
and lived in Monterey for 20 years. Dr. Gajewski retired in 1993. Prior
to working at DLI, he was a physics professor at the Medical Academy in
Lodz, Poland, and subsequently served as the dean of the physics department
at River State University in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He is survived by his
wife of 32 years, Suzanna Gajewski of Monterey; a son, Michael Gajewski
of San Juan Bautista; and a daughter, Joanna Janecka of Lodz, Poland. At
his request, no services will be held.

Rocky Han (Top)
Rocky S. Han, 63, died of cancer on Tuesday at Community Hospital of the
Monterey Peninsula.Mr. Han was born Sept. 14, 1938, in Seoul, Korea, and
lived in Monterey County for 26 years. He worked his way through college
in Hawaii by driving taxicabs, and eventually earned a master's degree in
education from Pepperdine University.Mr. Han then moved his family to Monterey,
finding a job at the Defense Language Institute as a Korean language instructor,
where he worked for more than 20 years.

Ramiro Hernandez (Top)
Ramiro "Ray" Hernandez, 68, a retired manager at the Defense Language
Institute, died Thursday following a lengthy illness at his home in Salinas.He
was born Aug. 7, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas and had lived in Salinas for
59 years.Mr. Hernandez served in the U.S. Army and was the forms and publications
manager for 33 years at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey.

Robert Higgins (Top)
Robert Lee Higgins, 53, a retired Army chief warrant officer, died Friday
in Bakersfield.He was born March 22, 1949, in Los Angeles and graduated
from El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera. He completed basic training at
Fort Ord, serving 28 years in the U.S. Army as a language operations officer.
He worked at the Presidio of Monterey and Defense Language Institute. He
spoke both Mandarin and Korean.

Joseph Hutchinson

Joseph C. Hutchinson, a retired professor from the Defense Language Institute,
died Saturday at Beverly Healthcare Center in Monterey. He was 82.Dr. Hutchinson
was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Hazlehurst, Ga. He lived on the Monterey Peninsula
for 28 years.He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Emory University
and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. He did postgraduate work
at the University of Paris. He retired from the Defense Language Institute
in 1988.

Edeltraut Judd (Top)
Edeltraut Regina Judd, 68, a teacher, died Saturday at her home in Pebble
Beach. She was born Feb. 15, 1935, in Schlawe, Germany. After World War
II she moved with her family to Freiburg, Germany, where she attended the
University of Freiburg. Mrs. Judd received professional honors from the
Defense Language Institute, where she taught German for 13 years. She had
lived in Pebble Beach for 26 years. She enjoyed travel, cooking and spending
time with her family. She is survived by two daughters, Regina Lebel and
Denise Lebel-Newman, both of Monterey; a son, John Lebel of Monterey; three
brothers, Horst Korlach of Emmendingen, Germany, Wolfgang Korlach of Ohlsbach,
Germany, and Helmut Korlach of Williamsburg, Va.; a sister, Doritha Unfricht
of Emmendingen; and a granddaughter. Private family services will be in
Pebble Beach. Healey Mortuary will handle arrangements.

Jozef Kasparek (Top)
Jozef Kasparek, 86, a retired professor at the Defense Language Institute,
died Thursday at his home.He was born April 20, 1915, in the Czech territories
of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He moved to Monterey 46 years ago.Mr. Kasparek
was a reserve officer in the Polish Army in 1938, helping to carry out covert
operations in Carpathian Rus, the easternmost tip of Czechoslovakia. In
1939 he refused to surrender to the Soviet Army and continued underground
activities until he was arrested.

Galina Kelly (Top)
Galina Kelly was born on September 15, 1922 in Harbin, China. Immediately
after World War II she worked for the US Army in Shanghai, China. She immigrated
unto the United States on July 4th, 1947. She always celebrated the Fourth
of July with a great amount of pride and patriotism. She obtained a Masters
Degree in Russian language and Literature from the University of Pennsylvania
in 1963 and retired as an instructor of Russian at the Defense Language
Institute. Colleagues and students recognized her as a dedicated and inspirational
teacher. She leaves behind her many special friends and associates. At her
request her ashes will be scattered over her beloved Monterey Bay.

Magdalena Esguerra "Dely" Lasconia, 70, a teacher, died Thursday
at Hospice House in Monterey.She was born Feb. 2, 1933, in Taytay Rizal,
the Philippines, and lived in Monterey County for 29 years. She taught for
42 years, including 16 at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey.Mrs.
Lasconia was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church, the Filipino-American
Club of Marina, Luzviminda Lions Club, and American Legion Post No. 31.

Laura M. Lee, 76, a retired administrative secretary, died from cancer Saturday
at Hospice of the Central Coast.She was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Near Piatt,
Okla., and lived in Monterey County for 47 years.Mrs. Lee was a specialist
2nd class in the Women's Army Corps from 1953-55. Upon her honorable discharge,
she worked for the U.S. Government at Fort Ord and Defense Language Institute
in various departments for more than 37 years. Mrs. Lee was fluent in Mandarin
Chinese.

Gabrielle Lubomirski
(Died February 2, 2003) (Top)
Gabrielle Elizabeth Lubomirski, 86, a former instructor at the Defense Language
Institute, died Feb. 2 in Walnut Creek. Mrs. Lubomirski was born March 14,
1917, in St. Petersburg, Russia, and had lived in Monterey County for 53
years before moving to Walnut Creek last year. She was a Polish-language
instructor at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey. She had been a
member of "AK," a Polish underground army during the German occupation
of Poland from 1939-45. From 1945-49, she worked with the United Nations
Relief and Rehabilitation Administration on the repatriation of Polish prisoners.
She was a member of several Roman Catholic organizations, and supported
the SPCA of Monterey County and other animal rights organizations. She is
survived by two cousins, Teresa Baranowska of Auburn and Antea Pallavicini
of Walnut Creek, and several family members throughout the country and in
Poland. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at San Carlos Cemetery.

Tatiana Malbin (Top)
Tatiana T. Malbin, 91, a retired Defense Language Institute professor, died
June 29 in Bethesda, Md.She was born May 20, 1911, in Riga, Latvia, and
lived in Monterey from 1952 to 1983.Mrs. Malbin was a professor of Russian
at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey for more than 30 years before
retiring in 1983. Her late husband, Alexander S. Malbin, was also a professor
of Russian at the DLI.

Robert McCauley (Top)
Robert Hugh McCauley, 84, a retired Army officer, died Saturday at Santa
Rosa Memorial Hospital.He was born Oct. 12, 1917, in San Antonio.Mr. McCauley
served in the U.S. Army from 1941 through his retirement in 1971, rising
to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He served in combat overseas in France,
Holland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany and Korea, and was posted to Japan
and Saudi Arabia. In 1962, he attended the Defense Language Institute at
the Presidio of Monterey as a student and later served in the DLI Command
Group.

Manuel Mencia (Top)
Manuel Bernabe Mencia, Ph.D., 81, a retired professor, died Tuesday at his
home.He was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Sancti Espiritu, Cuba, and lived in Washington,
D.C. for 28 years before moving to Pacific Grove in 1975.Mr. Mencia worked
at the Cuban Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he was the highest ranked
career diplomat until the takeover by Fidel Castro. In 1975 he was transferred
to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, where he was the supervisor
of the Spanish Department.

Bahman Moezzi (Top)
Bahman Moezzi, 82, a teacher, died Monday at his home.He was born April
3, 1920, in Tehran, Iran, and emigrated to San Francisco in 1946. He lived
in Monterey for 52 years. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from
the University of Tehran and worked as a language instructor at the Defense
Language Institute from 1950 to 1958.

Isabella M. Nemetsky, 72, a retired language instructor, died Sunday at
the Hospice House.She was born June 18, 1930, in Leningrad, Russia, and
lived in Marina for the last 17 years.Mrs. Nemetsky graduated from Leningrad
State University and completed her postgraduate work at Moscow Institute
of Foreign Languages. She immigrated to New York in 1980, then lived in
North Carolina for three years. Mrs. Nemetsky was a language instructor
for 42 years.

Joachim S. Porzig, 86, a retired German teacher for the Defense Language
Institute died of cancer on July 5th at his home in Monterey. Mr Porzig
was born March 13, 1916 in Altenburg, Germany and lived in Monterey for
46 years. He is survived by his loving life companion, Katharina Zets; a
sister Marianne Knoelle of Altenburg, Germany; a sister Elise Chuetze of
Cologne, Germany; three sons, Ullrich Porzig of Lawrence Kansas; Dr. Klaus
Porzig of Portola Valley; Lai Porzig of Pacific Grove; and six grandchildren.
A remembrenace of his life will be scheduled at a futre date. The family
suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the Hospice of the Central

Thomas Protelsch (Top)
Thomas Protelsch, 58, a language instructor, died April 17 at his home.He
was born Oct. 24, 1944, in Minnesota, and lived in Monterey for 18 years.Mr.
Protelsch served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He earned a master's degree
in Russian, Latin and classic Greek from Milwaukee State University in Milwaukee,
Wis. He was a teacher at the Defense Language Institute for 20 years.He
is survived by his son, David Protelsch of Monterey; and father, Warren
Protelsch of Wisconsin.

Mihailo Radusinovich

Mihailo Radusinovich, 90, a retired language instructor, died Friday at
Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.He was born Nov. 27, 1912,
in Buronje, Montenegro, in the former Yugoslavia. He survived the Depression
in Montenegro in the 1930s and the concentration camps in Germany during
World War II. He settled in Monterey in 1962.In Monterey, he taught Serbo-Croation
for 27 years at the Defense Language Institute, retiring in 1989. He enjoyed
opera, gardening and travel

Kamil Said (Died March 17, 2003)

Kamil T. Said, 89, an educator and writer, died Monday at his home in Del
Rey Oaks. Mr. Said was born Feb. 12, 1914, in Baghdad, Iraq. He attended
the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, before earning degrees at Colorado
State College at Greeley, Colo., and San Jose State University. In 1947
he embarked on a long career by first creating and then serving as the first
chairman of the Arabic Language Department at the Defense Language Institute
in Monterey, then known as the Army Language School. He wrote the first
two teaching textbooks, "Literary Arabic and Grammar," parts I
and II. He retired from DLI in 1973. Mr. Said served as adjunct professor
of national security at the Naval Postgraduate School, teaching history
of the Arab world, the Middle East and Islam from 1973 through 2000. He
taught the history of the Arabs and the Middle East at Monterey Peninsula
College. Before emigrating to the U.S., Mr. Said taught English and educational
psychology, served as principal of junior and senior high schools, wrote
two English language textbooks that were used in elementary schools in Iraq,
and was senior superintendent of Administration and Records in the Ministry
of Education. Mr. Said was a member of the Carmel Masonic Lodge and the
Arab-American Club of the Monterey Peninsula. He is survived by his wife
of 55 years, Selwa Said of Del Rey Oaks; a daughter, Ghity Corbat of Switzerland;
two sons, Dr. James Z. Said of Ashland, Ore., and John K. Said of Monterey;
five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters in
England and Iraq. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Santa
Rosalia Chapel at the San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey. The family suggests
that any memorial contributions be made to the Carmel Foundation, the Adult
Day Care Program of the Salvation Army, Hospice of the Central Coast or
the donor's favorite charity.

Peter Schultz (Top)
Peter James Schultz, 55, a teacher, died Jan. 3 in Monterey.He was born
Oct. 18, 1946, in San Francisco and lived in the Pacific Grove area for
24 years.Mr. Schultz served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1978. Most
of his studies took place at St. Mary's College in Moraga and the Defense
Language Institute in Monterey. He earned degrees in English and Russian.
He taught Russian at the Defense Language Institute for 20 years, and loved
working with students in his computer.

Paul Sujan (Top)
Paul F. "Uncle Paul" Sujan, 86, a retired language instructor,
died Friday at Avalon Health Care in Monterey. He was born Sept. 28, 1917,
in Poscony, Hungary, and had lived in Monterey for 47 years. Mr. Sujan
was a Hungarian-language instructor at the Defense Language Institute for
25 years. He was raised in Budapest, Hungary, and came to the United States
in 1951. Passionate about working with youth, he was an avid member of the
Boy Scouts of America White Stag program. The Presidio building where Boy
Scout meetings are held was named after him in 2002. Each year, he would
take scouts to cemeteries in the area on Veterans Day to remember the soldiers
who died in war. He is survived by his wife, Margarete Sujan of Monterey;
three sons, Zoltan Sujan of Monterey, Paul Sujan of Monterey, and Andrew
Sujan of Pacific Grove; two daughters, Sibylla White of Norfolk, Va., and
Margarete Davis of Vancouver, Wash.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by a son, Peter Sujan.Funeral
and memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Sunao Torakawa (Top)
Sunao George Torakawa, 81, U.S. Army retired, died Monday at his home. He
was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Battle Mountain, Nev., and lived in Del Rey
Oaks for 36 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the
Korean conflict, retiring after 20 years of service in 1966. He worked at
the the Defense Language Institute for 26 years. Mr. Torakawa was a member
of the Seaside American Legion Post 591, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of
the Monterey Peninsula and Nisei Memorial Post No. 1629. Mr. Torakawa was
a graduate of the Military Intelligence Language School and Counter Intelligence
Corps School. He received an Army Commendation Medal while serving as an
intelligence analyst and earned the Meritorious Unit Commendation while
serving with the 7th Psychological Operations Group. He received both the
U.S. Navy Presidential Unit Citation and a Navy Commendation serving in
the 163rd Military Intelligence Service, while he was attached to the 1st
Provisional Marine Brigade. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Masako
Torakawa of Del Rey Oaks; a daughter, Rose Torakawa of Trabuco Canyon; a
brother, Takashi Torakawa of Seaside; and a sister, Makie Okinoof Hiroshima,
Japan. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Keiko Torakawa. Visitation
will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Seaside.

Harold Tsuchiya (Top)
Harold Kurao Tsuchiya, 103, a language instructor at the Defense Language
Institute, died Nov. 14 at his home.He was born Nov. 7, 1899, in Numazu,
Japan, and lived in Monterey County for 51 years. He earned a bachelor's
degree from Stetson University in Florida, then went on to earn another
one in theology from the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Chicago.
He received a master's degree from Winona Lake School of Theology.

William Terrio (Top)
William Joseph Terrio, 74, a retired U.S. Army sergeant first class, died
Friday at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.He was born Dec.
29, 1927, in Brighton, Mass., and lived in Marina for 25 years. He served
26 years in the U.S. Army, including tours in Korea and Vietnam. He graduated
first in his class at the Defense Language Institute's Japanese language
course, and earned the Gen. Maxwell Taylor Award.After his retirement, he
worked at Toys Etc. in Monterey.

Andrew Vinson (Top)
Andrew V. Vinson, 88, a retired Russian instructor at the Defense Language
Institute, died Monday of a stroke after a long hospitalization.He was born
in 1914 in Vsevolod Vinogradov, Moscow, and was a resident of Monterey and
Corralitos for 52 years.At age 4, Mr. Vinson fled with his family to Turkey.
The family later settled in Czechoslovakia. He studied business administration
at Charles University, trained as an amateur boxer.

Celine Vu (Top)
Celine Tuyet Mai Tran Vu, 74, a homemaker, died June 28 from complications
caused by emphysema at her home in Sacramento.She was born April 24, 1928
in Vietnam. She moved to Pacific Grove in 1961, and lived in Sacramento
one week before her death. She taught Vietnamese at the Defense Language
Institute from 1982 to 1999.She is survived by her husband of 50 years,
Thiep Dinh Vu of Sacramento; three daughters, Helen Vu Thi Huong Thao of
Millbrae, Christine Vu Thi Huong Thu of Sacramento.

William Yui
William Yui, 76, a language instructor, died Sunday at City of Hope Medical
Center in Duarte of complications from leukemia.He was born Dec. 9, 1925,
in Beijing, and came to the United States in 1947. He attended the University
of California.In 1953 he moved to Pacific Grove, where he was a member of
St. Angela's Church. He recently moved to Altadena.Mr. Yui worked at the
Defense Language Institute until 1994 as an instructor, supervisor, chairman
and course developer.

Olga Youmin (Top)
Olga P. Youmin, 78, a former teacher, died Tuesday at Community Hospital
of the Monterey Peninsula.She was born May 8, 1924, in China and was a Pacific
Grove resident for 32 years.Mrs. Youmin last worked at the Defense Language
Institute. She was a member of the Sisterhood at St. Seraphim's Russian
Orthodox Church and sang in the choir.
