(DLIAA) Scholarship Program
Walter Scurei Scholarship
The
DLI Alumni Association (DLIAA), is committed to promoting and advancing
the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) and its
alumni (see its mission statement at www.dli-alumni.org/mission_statement.htm).
To demonstrate this commitment to its alumni, DLIAA has established the
Walter Scurei scholarship. Accordingly, DLIAA will provide up to $4000 annually
for study in the acquisition of an academic degree (AA/AS, BA/BS, MA/MS,
PhD, etc) in any field, from any US accredited program.
The
scholarship application process is open from October to March each year.
Applications and associated forms will be available during that period.

Eligibility: The spouse or child of
any former DLI student who graduated from any of the APPROVED LANGUAGE PROGRAMS
OFFERED by DLI is eligible. The record of study and graduation results must
have been entered in the official DLIFLC database kept in Monterey, California.
Scholarship(s):
Each year DLIAA will grant up to four $1000 scholarships to selected individuals
for a period not to exceed four consecutive years, or until completion of
his/her degree. A maximum of four scholarships will be funded in any particular
year.
PLEASE NOTE: It is only necessary to complete ONE online application.
Selection: A panel composed of five individuals, the Scholarship
Manager (as designated by the DLIAA president), a DLIAA board member, a
DLIFLC school dean, a DLIFLC Service Commander, and a local alum, will review
the applications submitted and will select one individual to receive the
scholarship for that year.
The following items are required for all scholarship applications.
1. Completed online application (which includes a personal statement). You must indicate the degree sought and the institution where the study will take place.
2. Completed references (only references on the official online form will be accepted). A total of three references must be submitted.3. Official academic transcripts from the applicant's current or most recent secondary or postsecondary institution. High school students who have not yet graduated should send partial transcripts. These can be requested and sent directly from the institution or mailed to DLIAA in an unopended envelope along with any other materials you are submitting. Only official (sealed) copies will be accepted. All materials must be received by March 1 to be considered. The mailing address is: DLI Alumni Association (DLIAA), PO Box 5653 Presidio of Monterey, CA 93944. Note: Completing the application is the responsibility of the applicant."
The major factor considered in awarding these scholarships is academic excellence.
However, applicants are encouraged to include community involvement, humanitarian
aid, and other pertinent areas of their background.
Recipients
must demonstrate progress in completing the degree and remain in good academic
standing for each academic term that the scholarship is applicable. Progress
in "completing the degree" and "good academic standing"
typically is determined by each academic institution unless otherwise determined
by the DLIAA Scholarship board.
The board has the right to determine whether scholarship funds are mailed directly to the scholarship recipient or to the respective academic institution.
